Welcome to our Video Series!
I am a psychologist and mother, although other pursuits such as songwriting, meditation, and teaching are all important parts of what makes me, me. I helped start Deep Eddy Psychotherapy (alongside my sister Charlotte, husband Glenn, and both my parents), which gave me many opportunities to train and supervise budding therapists. Ten years ago I began leading a 6-month training group called âMinding the Heartâ that is a deep-dive into experiential ways of working in therapy. I am drawn to experiential methods because I believe it is through contacting the deepest parts of ourselvesâthe ones that can only be contacted experientiallyâthat the most profound transformation can occur.
I was introduced to this field through my parents who are also psychologists and themselves both deeply invested in the healing journey. What an impact it had on me to be surrounded by adults who were interested in the mindânot only my parents, but their rich community of friends and colleagues. Often their mentors would visit from out of town to train therapists in Austinâand it was during their shared dinners that I would sit and listen to the psychology talk, completely enthralled.
Needless to say I have wanted to be a psychologist since I can remember. And while I am still endlessly curious about the science of the mindâmy deepest desire is to help people appreciate the beauty of the human mind. To feel reverence for our complexity, and a sympathetic understanding for why that complexity makes us vulnerable to suffering.
For all of my videos, please check out my youtube channel, Dr. Tori Olds. I have a series that covers the experiential therapy movement, as well as series that focus on specific forms of experiential therapy, like IFS, AEDP, and coherence therapy. Below is the first series I ever created, which explores the science of transformational change through memory reconsolidation.
OUR EMOTIONAL ISSUES: WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?
We all know we react in ways that sometimes feel irrational and perhaps even harmful, particularly when faced with certain triggers. But why is that? In this video we will demystify our emotional responses and behaviors and understand why our brains evolved to run more on âlearned instinctsâ than on logic.
LEARN MOREHOW DO EXPERIENCES SHAPE IDENTITY? â WHY YOUR ISSUES MAKE COMPLETE SENSE!
We all think of ourselves as a little crazy. But the truth is, we arenât! Our brain is guiding us to respond in ways that it actually learned (through experience!) are more likely to lead to our survival. So why are our choices sometimes so seemingly unhealthy?
LEARN MORETHE PSYCHOLOGY OF SCHEMAS: WHY CHILDHOOD CAN MESS US UP
Why do therapists obsess about childhood? Why would experiences from so long ago still impact us today? The answer is pretty simple. It rests on the fact that our âissuesâ are not actually defects; they are modes of responding that we LEARNED.
LEARN MOREMEMORY RECONSOLIDATION: HOW TO REWIRE YOUR BRAIN
There are two types of change: incremental, which is often slow and takes more effort to maintain, and transformational, which can happen in a moment and is effortless to maintain. Given the benefits of the latter, this video outlines how to position ourselves to achieve transformational change.
LEARN MORETRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE: A DEEPER KIND OF GROWTH
There are two types of change: incremental, which is often slow and takes more effort to maintain, and transformational, which can happen in a moment and is effortless to maintain. Given the benefits of the latter, this video outlines how to position ourselves to achieve transformational change.
LEARN MOREHOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THERAPY
Therapy isnât magicâcertain things need to happen in order for our brain to change. If you can be aware of what those things are, and actively try to engage them during therapy, you are more likely to have a positive experience.
